Bots Push Zappo's Many Steps Ahead

Zappos-robotsI am in love with the Zappo's brand. They are steps ahead of their competitors in so many ways: free shipping, both ways; they embrace social media, evident by their participation in Facebook & Twitter; and are transparent, and run by real people. So I was not so surprised to see that they are utilizing innovative technologies to improve their already expeditious service. Check out these bots, from the Kiva Systems’ Mobile Fulfillment System, at the company's storage warehouse, in charge of moving and managing the inventory of shoes, clothing and accessories.

Gotta love a brand that values its customers and continues to seek new ways to improve their service. What's next, same day service :) ?

The Sutton Garden Tour Was A Success!

SuttonGardenTour2008 This past weekend a couple hundred people, including myself, Mike, and his parents, roamed and viewed 9 personal gardens in my historic home town of Sutton, MA, as part of the 2008 Sutton Garden Tour organized by the Sutton Garden Club. Each property, peppered with local artists capturing the picturesque views and robust gardens, had its own unique flair that really communicated the individual personality and character of its owner. The day was a perfect 10 – sunny in the 80's – and culminated with a wine and cheese party on my parent's lawn. Congrats to my (now exhausted yet relieved) rock star Mom for spearheading this fabulous event.

Read At Work (Without Getting Caught)

ReadAtWork Do you wish sometimes you could just read a book at work if bored, and no one would say a thing? Well, now you can, thanks to the launch of the New Zealand Book Council's Read At Work website. They have developed a full-screen site that mirrors the generic Windows desktop, and within the file folders placed below a faux "Trash Can" and "My Computer" icon, you'll find poetry, short stories, and even the novella "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. Each literary piece is presented in fake PowerPoint format, complete with the text organized in bullets, boxes and arrows. The NZ Book Council created the site to promote reading and increased accessibility to books.

Now, I don't really have down time at work lately, and if I do any reading these days, it's primarily industry news which is acceptable workplace reading; plus, I am on a Mac and I use Keynote, so this site would probably attract more attention than mask it (maybe a Mac version is V2?). Nevertheless, the site still made me chuckle, and there are plenty of idlers out there sure to reap the benefits.

Pigalle Kicks Off Summer w/ $1 Oysters

Rating: 4 forks

We met some friends out for dinner at Pigalle Saturday night in Boston's Theatre District, and dined on the patio despite the blistering heat that's been paralyzing many New Englanders this weekend. I actually had never been to Pigalle, named after the red light district in Paris, which is surprising as it's topped the list for a few fellow foodies that I have met and also shares the same chef as Marco, a favorite of mine the N. End. And it was – as expected – very tasty.

What drew us was not the rich French fare, though quite a regular andPigalle favorite of mine lately, but rather the $1 "dressed" oysters, available on the patio and the bar to kick off the summer. The minuette is drizzled directly onto the oyster rather than being served in a small side dish, hence the "dressed" descriptive. Let's just say, between 8 of us, we had 72, and not everyone ate oysters ;)

We all stayed on the lighter side for our main course, and Mike and I shared a few appetizers:

  • Tuna Martini with Seaweed Salad, Spicy Crème Fraîche and Tobiko Roe $21.*
  • Roasted-Beet Spring Rolls with Mint, Cilantro and Horseradish Cream $12.
  • Duck Liver Terrine with Toasted Brioche and Armagnac-Soaked Prunes $14.
  • Cream of White Asparagus Soup with Fresh Almond Foam, Maine Crab Meat, Carrot Julienne and Crispy Shallots 15.

The food was great, well portioned, and fresh. I think by far our fav was the rich, creamy white asparagus soup; a must if you visit. The Steak Tartar a fellow diner ordered looked amazing too, but we had already snacked on a healthy portion of tartar for lunch at The Butcher Shop (the best in the city by far) just a few short hours prior. Ok, yes, it was an "oink" kind of day!

I'd recommend not sitting on Pigalle's patio if you have a large party; it's questionable whether or not they really should allow large parties out there, as there is limited space permitted by the City and therefore the tables are flush against the window, yielding a rather awkward situation for both conversing with friends at the other end of the table as well as constantly catching the eye of the indoor diner staring out the same window that you are facing. Plus, the servers can barely squeeze by to serve the rest of the diners.

We look forward to going back, and sampling the main dishes off their menu. I think next time we'll dine at the bar, which is small but intimate, or in the elegant, romantic dining room. We also are eager to try their tasting menu:

Petit $95. with wine $125.
Grand $115. with wine $160.

The street parking is by permit only, however garage parking, connected to the restaurant, is available for $10 with validation.

Ilex Designs | Hybrid Orchid

Hybrid_Orchid We stopped into Ilex Designs on Berkeley Street in the South End, and picked up this rare hybrid orchid (click photo to enlarge) and a miniature palm. I was so impressed by the plants, picked flowers, vases, and unique interior decorating pieces in the petite retail store; and co-owner and award-winning Environmental stylist Andrew Anderson was running the show and was super pleasant and knowledgeable. We first learned of Ilex from our friends at Brix, after finally asking where they acquire their unique, resplendent orchids that are so brilliant they look artificial. They also design custom arrangements for weddings & events, office spaces, restaurants, design centers, etc. Definitely worth a trip and consideration the next time you are thinking about buying or sending flowers.

Joseph Jaffe Could Be Yours!

JaffeonebayI am a big fan of Joseph Jaffe. For those of you who aren't in the digital marketing industry, he is truly a thought leader in the new marketing space, a hell of a speaker, the author of the blog Jaffe Juice, the voice behind Across the Sound new marketing podcast, the author of Life After the 30-Second Spot, and President and Chief Interuptor of the marketing firm, crayon.

So to my fellow marketers, Jaffe fans, and all the ladies who get juiced over his accent, well, his consulting time is being auctioned off and there's just 24 hours left! The highest bidder will get a dinner brainstorming session with Jaffe himself, to raise money to help fight leukemia and lymphoma (a cause that is personally very dear to me).

Bid here!
